Hilux & Fortuner 48V Hybrid: Power Meets Efficiency

The Hilux and Fortuner take a bold step forward with their first electrified powertrain—the 48V mild hybrid system. Designed to enhance both performance and efficiency, this innovation refines driveability with smoother acceleration, reduced noise, and lower vibrations, whether on the road or off the beaten track.

Crucially, the hybrid system preserves the rugged capabilities these models are known for—maintaining the 700mm wading depth and full load-carrying strength. Ideal for business and commercial users, it delivers improved fuel efficiency and responsiveness without compromise.

Our direction is shaped by three key objectives:

New 48V Hybrid Technology
The motor-generator, a permanent magnet synchronous unit, charges the hybrid battery, which supplies up to 12 kW and 65 Nm for improved acceleration.

Regenerative braking
The motor-generator enhances driveability with regenerative braking, saving fuel and improving control. Acceleration and deceleration feel smoother, while off-road capability benefits from a lower idle speed (600 rpm).

Smooth Stop-Start
A driver display shows CHG (regeneration), ECO (assist), and PWR (boost). The stop-start system delivers quick throttle response and quiet restarts, with the motor-generator replacing a conventional starter for seamless performance.

New 48V Hybrid Technology

The Hilux and Fortuner’s 48V hybrid system pairs a 2.8L turbodiesel engine with an electric motor-generator, 48V lithium-ion battery, and DC-DC converter. Designed for seamless integration, it maintains the vehicle’s 700mm wading depth and withstands tough conditions.

The motor-generator, a permanent magnet synchronous unit, charges the hybrid battery, which supplies up to 12 kW and 65 Nm for improved acceleration. A durable two-arm tensioner ensures belt reliability in rough terrain, while noise and vibration levels match those of gasoline vehicles.

Weighing just 7.6 kg, the 13-cell, 4.3Ah battery fits under the rear seats with minimal space impact. Both the battery and low-profile DC-DC converter are water-protected.

The 204 DIN hp (150 kW) engine delivers 500 Nm of torque (1,600-2,800 rpm) with common rail fuel injection, a variable nozzle turbo, and HVO100 diesel compatibility. Emission controls include a particulate filter, Selective Catalytic Reduction, and urea injection.

Regenerative Braking & Smooth Stop-Start

The motor-generator enhances driveability with regenerative braking, saving fuel and improving control. Acceleration and deceleration feel smoother, while off-road capability benefits from a lower idle speed (600 rpm). Reduced engine load also improves efficiency.
